Started with mozarella. Italian PFM Packaging Machinery is one of the most important machine producers within SFK's range of products. PFM originally started with the design of a special machine for packing pickled mozzarella cheese. Today PFM is specialized in the construction of advanced vertical and horizontal flowpacking machines. All machines are constructed in stainless steel.
PFM is marketing more than 20 basic models where different, customized packaging concepts can be added.
PFM is a very active machine constructor and constantly designing state-of-the-art machine solutions, adaptable to a variety of trades and products.
Examples are flowpacking machines for salad and fresh vegetables, different cheese types, chocolate, candy, meat, bakery products, ready-cooked and semi-cooked products and much more.
Flowpacking is coming
Flowpacking, in a combination with modified atmosphere, seems to be the type of packaging coming quickly forward, is Lars G. Stocks' opinion. Even within product areas previously packed with form-fill-seal and vacuum techniques, e.g. cold cuts, hard cheese, sausages, etc., flowpacking is becoming still more common. These packages are easier to open and re-use than vacuum packages and when it comes to sliced products, the troublesome pressing of the products, caused by the vacuuming, is avoided. The fact that flowpacking grows increasingly popular, does, however, not mean that the form-fill-seal technique is disappearing. A variety of food products will still be packed in plastic trays and the like where the form-fill-seal technique is used for forming the packages, and SFK has a large selection of form-fill-seal machines from German PS SystemPack in our product range.
Quick changes of size
It is a still growing requirement from the food industry that it should be possible to change size and form easily and without a long production downtime. With form-fill-seal machines it is often a disadvantage that a switch in size normally means a long stop for changing tools and re-warming the machine. PS SystemPack, however, has solved this problem by constructing machines with which sizes are easily changed by means of a system of cassettes of up to four pre-heated deep draw tools.
PS SystemPack's FFS-machinesare applicable for most food products, says Lars G. Stocks, and the product range includes machines suitable for any business from large-scale industries to small companies with special production.
System for ready-cooked food PS SystemPack has also constructed a packaging and processing system for ready-cooked food, which SFK thinks holds a major potential. The system builds on ready-cooked hot food (70-80o C) being form-fill-seal packed along with a certain quantity of steam in a PS Variovac vacuum packaging machine. The package is then shock-cooled and after a cool-storage of up to 2 weeks it is transported to the place of consumption where the food is heated to a temperature of 65-70o C. The steam in the package does not only make the food taste more "freshly made", but also prevents the package from cracking during heating.
This concept is very interesting, especially for schools, hospitals, canteens, air lines and other kinds of companies where large quantities of ready-cooked food is served.
